Sustainability The Coroplast Group supports the circular economy as a foundation member of Circular Valley

For a raw material- and energy-intensive industrial company like the Coroplast Group, the circular economy plays a central role as a production model. That is why it is also an integral part of our sustainability strategy and does not end at our property boundary in Wuppertal. We want to make an active contribution to advancing this topic of the future regionally, nationally and internationally. Therefore it was only logical for us to become involved in Circular Valley as a foundation member.

Circular Valley Idea, goals and structure of the foundation

The guiding idea of Circular Valley

The still predominantly linear economy causes major environmental problems with its material and product waste. In order to change this, the association "WuppertalBewegung" has founded the foundation "Circular Valley®". It regards itself as a place where influential corporations, established companies and science come together with resourceful startups from all over the world to jointly develop ideas and solutions for an efficient circular economy.

The main objectives of the Foundation

This creates a dynamic network that makes the industrial and scientific location of Wuppertal an engine for globally relevant future technologies. Selected startups and researchers from all over the world are settling in. Together with regional companies and scientific institutions, they develop sustainable business ideas, technologies and solutions that help to close recyclable material loops and avoid environmentally harmful waste.

The structure of Circular Valley

The core of Circular Valley is the foundation as a central hub, which exchanges information intensively with the world of politics and conducts well-organized public relations work. In this way, the foundation creates awareness, understanding and support for the topic of circular economy and the activities of the network. The Circular Economy Accelerator GmbH, which is part of the foundation, takes care of the startups. Twice a year, founders, tinkerers and inventors from all over the world can apply here for a four-month mentoring program, for each of which 15 young companies are selected. The participants are also part of the large, constantly growing Circular Valley alumni network.

Demo Day des Circular Economy Accelerators 2021
Ceremonial setting: The Circular Valley® Forum 2022 at the Historische Stadthalle Wuppertal brought together top decision-makers from a wide range of industries.

Circular Valley will be to the circular economy what Silicon Valley is to the digital economy. We are starting this journey regionally, but in times of global supply chains and raw material management, the project must ultimately be thought of internationally.

Our Engagement Expectations and goals of the Coroplast Group

From Wuppertal into the world

The Coroplast Group is a family-owned company with its roots in Wuppertal, that is socially committed and globally active. We are consistently driving forward our sustainability strategy through concrete measures. These activities now include our foundation membership in Circular Valley. We are convinced: promoting the circular economy is of worldwide importance and our home country is an ideal starting point for doing so. This is because we have strong local support from globally successful companies, politicians and the general public. The scientific institutions are excellent and the long industrial tradition in Wuppertal has always combined economic action with social responsibility. Last but not least, the surrounding Rhine-Ruhr region, as the largest metropolitan region in Europe, offers the Circular Valley project the best conditions for growth.

The goals of the Coroplast Group

With our foundation membership, we want to actively support and shape the topic of circular economy. To this purpose, we will co-determine the development focus of the mentoring programs and participate in the selection of the startups. In this way, we would like to expand our network, support startups that suit us individually and cooperate with them in the longer term. In this way, we hope to gain many valuable impulses for the sustainable development of our products and processes. All business and central divisionsand and, of course, the worldwide locations of the Coroplast Group are involved in this project.

The numerous guests of the Demo Day 2021
Intensive exchange: The participants of the mentoring program were excited about the numerous guests and the great interest in their concepts.

Circular economy is another key approach to saving resources even more sustainably in the future. Circular Valley® offers the ideal platform for this. As a member of the foundation, we are proud to be able to accompany the further development of the network and the accelerator for young startups and perhaps also shape it a certain way.

Outlook Sustainability as a social and economic opportunity

The Coroplast Group has always tried to bring innovation and sustainability together. Accordingly, the support of the circular economy is a valuable impetus for our traditionally high innovative strength and the courage to pursue new sustainable paths. Such change often causes concern – especially in Germany but in the Coroplast Group, we know from over 90 years of experience that if you know your roots and at the same time face the future with curiosity and courage, unexpected opportunities arise. Because sustainability does not mean doing without or losing economic power and quality of life – quite the opposite. Properly implemented, sustainable thinking and action secures and creates jobs, ensures prosperity and a livable environment.

Examples of sustainable products from the Coroplast Group: high-voltage cables, adhesive tapes made from recyclate, or courier backpacks made from scrap material
Sustainable products of the Coroplast Group: We support the mobility revolution with our high-voltage cables for electric vehicles and develop PET and PE adhesive tapes based on recyclates. We also transform scrap material into new products, such as courier backpacks, as part of CoroUpcycling.
