A Clear Process for Retired IT Hardware
Since April 2026, the Coroplast Group has been working with afb social & green IT (AfB gGmbH) to manage retired IT hardware through a clearly structured process. The goal is to avoid sending devices directly to electronic waste and instead first determine whether they can be given a second life.
Devices suitable for reuse are professionally refurbished and remarketed. Hardware that can no longer be reused is recycled in accordance with proper disposal standards. afb social & green IT specializes in the refurbishment and remarketing of used IT hardware. After the handover, the external partner is responsible for inspecting the devices, performing certified data erasure, and remarketing suitable equipment.
Certified Data Erasure as a Key Requirement
A central part of the partnership is the secure handling of company data. Even after devices are no longer in use, storage media may still contain sensitive information. afb therefore carries out certified erasure of existing data. If data erasure is not technically possible, the storage media are shredded and then sent for recycling. This ensures that data protection and responsible reuse are considered together.
I am very pleased that we have entered into this partnership with afb social & green IT. It allows us to keep our retired hardware in circulation: devices are securely erased through a certified process, professionally refurbished, and then remarketed. In this way, we are making an important contribution to conserving resources while combining environmental responsibility with social value.
First Handover Completed at the End of June
The first handover to afb social & green IT has already taken place. At the end of June, 110 notebooks and tablets, along with nearly 60 monitors, were handed over. The devices had previously been collected and prepared for transfer at the Wuppertal site. The collection and handover process currently applies to the Wuppertal site. In the future, additional sites may also be included, particularly through centralized collection of devices from all German locations in Wuppertal. Different types of IT hardware can be included in the process, including notebooks, desktop PCs, monitors, and accessories such as computer mice and keyboards. afb also accepts headsets and refurbishes them in a hygienically safe manner.
Reuse, Data Protection, and Social Inclusion
Through this partnership, the Coroplast Group combines several important aspects of responsible IT asset management: the potential reuse of devices, verified data protection processes, and a clearly defined internal handover structure. The partnership also has a social dimension. afb employs people with disabilities and creates jobs in the primary labor market. After the handover, suitable devices are refurbished and resold through the afb online shop. Pickup intervals depend on the amount of hardware collected. Once a sufficient quantity has been gathered, a pickup request is submitted to afb social & green IT and a date is scheduled. In this way, an internal IT process becomes a structured approach for securely passing on retired hardware and enabling reuse wherever it is technically feasible.
